A Multi-Disciplinary Researcher

Currently an Affiliated Research Scientist at University of Delaware

Trained physicist (Caltech BS), business analyst (Harvard MBA), economist (LSE MSc)

Professional research experience:

  • Sustainable industrial ecology – Published peer-reviewed articles on sustainable production of nickel, cobalt, copper, manganese using deep-sea polymetallic nodules.
  • Economics – As BCG consultant, developed $1B economic development plan for Puerto Rico government. At LSE, quantified impact of 2015 de-corruption of Argentina’s statistics institution on social welfare. For polymetallic nodule project, analyzed potential impacts of nodule collection on industry players and country economies.
  • Business strategy, marketing research – At BCG and independently, conducted numerous applied quantitative and qualitative research projects to characterize industrial dynamics and drive strategic decisions.
  • Applied network engineering – At Northrop Grumman / UCLA, designed self-forming radio-satellite infrastructureless internet topologies deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. At TruePoint Systems, co-invented an inventory locating system that triangulates chirping ZigBee devices using custom-designed phased-array antennae and beamforming algorithms in software acting on i and q digital samples in real time.
  • Physics – At Caltech, identified quasars using the DPOSS II Sky Survey and taught an applied optics lab. At Argonne National Laboratory, modeled evolution of Type II superconductor vortices.

An Engineer & Entrepreneur

Deep-tech and systems engineering leader (complex software systems with substantial hardware, networking, real-time components) and startup cofounder

9 years of professional engineering experience as a systems engineer, entrepreneur, and programmer:

  • Technology startup cofounder ($2M funded) – Co-invented a real-time locating system for logistical tracking inside a warehouse, co-leading team of 12. Repurposed expensive phased array concept from defense by relaxing accuracy requirements and replicating several hardware functions in software.
  • Systems engineer for large defense contractor – Managed systems design, architecture, requirements, prototyping for $100M+ hardware/software defense systems: battlefield internet, high-energy chemical laser weapon, next-generation GPS, low observables aircraft.
  • Server software programmer for derivatives trading – Wrote reliability-critical C++ algorithms to manage order routing and exchange states, connecting brokers to top derivatives exchanges worldwide.
  • Sample tools – C++, python (including some ML), ZigBee, TCP/IP, ad hoc networking, Assembly, Matlab, DOORS, WordPress
  • Sample proficiencies – System architecture design, DODAF, requirements management, use-case-driven human-centric design, product management, real-time algorithms with complex race conditions, system modeling, system testing, requirements verification, service-oriented architecture design, safety-critical systems design
